3M Paste Wax

Take your pick.

I know, I crusade against using automotive products on boats and here is a car wax. This wax is here because of our customer, Richard W. of Spring Lake, Michigan. Captain Dick, as he likes to be called, has been sailing the Great Lakes for nearly five decades and claims to have used every carnauba wax know to man.

While I prefer the newer, polymer, gel coat sealants to protect my boat's finish, Captain Dick is a devotee of carnauba waxes. I can talk about the superiority of modern sealants until I'm blue in the face but I'll never change Dick's mind on the subject. Captain Dick will only use a carnauba wax on his boat.

Captain Dick's favorite marine wax and the only wax he will use on his sail boat is 3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax. Dick says it out shines, out lasts and out performs every wax he has ever used.

Several years ago, Dick purchased 3M Show Car Paste Wax for his car and swears it's the same wax he was using on his boat but costs about 40% less. Ever since then, he has used Perfect It Show Car Paste Wax on his car and boat.

My 3M sales rep claims he does not know if the two waxes are the same formula or not. He did say that both formulas incorporate an advanced, acrylic silicone fluoropolymer (A.S.F.) which was developed by the research chemists at 3M. this fluoropolymer was created by chemically grafting silicone and fluorine onto an acrylic backbone. This new polymer is extremely slippery, water repellant and resists marine scum and organisms.

Captain Dick has used Show Car Paste Wax on marine fiberglass, marine topside paints, painted aluminum and metal parts. He claims at the end of the season, when he takes his boat out of the water, waterline and scum simply washes off without hard scrubbing.

While I haven't used this wax on my boat, I have used it on my car and can confirm that it creates a great shine and sheds water better than any carnauba wax I've ever used.

Perhaps Captain Dick and I can reach a compromise agreement with this product. It is in every respect a modern, polymer product but it just happens to be suspended in a carnauba wax base!

We stock both. We don't know if these two waxes are the same or not. We stock both 3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax and 3M Perfect-It, Show Car Paste Wax. We'll leave the decision of which to buy up to you!
