This one-step marine,
cleaner/sealant is one of the best we've found.
Every so often a product comes
along that surprises us because it surpasses our expectations and the
manufacturer's claims. This is one such example.
I happened to be speaking with
the technical support people at Star brite about their Premium Golden Teak Oil
when they mentioned that Premium Marine Polish with Teflon was their
single largest selling product. Now Star brites a big company so there has to be
a whole lot of satisfied customers using this polish and re-buying it. I asked
how their polish was different from other marine polishes.
First, the name "Marine
Polish" is slightly confusing as I equate a polish with a cleaner and this
product is a combination cleaner and protectant. Most people would consider this
a cleaner/wax but I don't think there's any wax in it. I believe it's a totally
synthetic, polymer formula so technically it's a marine cleaner/sealant.
The key word here is
"marine". Premium Marine Polish was designed from a clean sheet of
paper as a marine gel coat, fiberglass product. It is not an automotive product
re-labeled for marine use. This is important because gel coat is fundamentally
different from automotive finishes. Gel coat is porous and these pores must be
thoroughly cleaned of oxidized polymer residues (called chalk) before the
surface is sealed.
The first feature that
distinguishes Premium Marine Polish is it's strong, solvent cleaner. This makes
it exceptionally effective for deep cleaning surface pores. This cleaner also
allows Marine Polish to be applied over pre-existing wax or sealants. It will
completely remove any product on the surface. Star brite states that this
product is safe for painted surfaces but I don't think I'll be putting it on my
car.
The second unique
characteristic of Premium Marine Polish is it's exceptional bonding
characteristics. Test conducted by offshore power boat racers yielded durability
4 to 6 time longer than conventional marine waxes. Additionally, Premium Marine
Polish creates a super slick, non-stick coating which reduces drag, repels dirt,
grime, stains and marine growth. Reduced drag also translates into lower
operating costs by increasing fuel efficiency.
Lastly, UV inhibitors help
retard fading and oxidation.
Premium Marine Polish with
Teflon is available in both a liquid and a paste but the paste is not the
traditional, hard paste. It's more of a thick gel.

and a soft paste formula. |
I selected the paste formula of Premium Marine Polish to try
on a friend's Bass Boat. I selected the paste version because it states on
the can that it can be applied by machine and I intended to use my Porter
Cable 7424 polisher with a
Gel
Coat Finishing Pad. (The liquid, Marine Polish bottle doesn't
mention anything about machine application but Star brite says it can also
be applied by dual-action polisher) I say intended to use my machine
polisher because when I arrived at my friend's storage unit, there was no
power. We ended up polishing the boat by hand.
I used a Viper
Microfiber Applicator Pad and applied Marine Polish in a
circular motion using moderate pressure. I wasn't rubbing hard. I was
using the same pressure I would use to polish my car. Premium Marine
Polish was a breeze to apply. It wiped on with very little effort and
dried quickly to a light haze. My friend followed me around the boat
buffing off the dried haze with a Viper
Perfect Shine Buffing Cloth. Actually, buffing isn't the
correct term as it implies repetitive rubbing. I should say that my friend
followed me around the boat wiping the haze off. This haze wiped off
effortlessly revealing a streak-free, super-slippery shine!
Bottom line.
Premium
Marine Polish with Teflon is a winner. I didn't have any Meguiar's
Flagship Marine Wax with me for direct comparison but I would rate the
shine as being equal with Premium Marine Polish creating a noticeably slipperier
finish.
For older boats with
moderate to severe oxidation (chalk) and for the perfectionist, I still
recommend Gel Coat Labs two-step, machine compound and machine finish
procedure.
For new boats or boats
where the gel coat has been well maintained, Premium Marine Polish is a
whisker away from being the perfect cleaner/sealant and it costs a whole
lot less than using a separate compound and sealant and takes a lot less
effort than a two-step procedure.
